A Day to Energize and Recognize!

Caramoor Celebrates Juneteenth, Presented In Collaboration With The Town Of Bedford
Join Caramoor on June 19th for a celebration of African American freedom and achievement! Known as our country’s second Independence Day, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and honors their families, heritage, and resilience. This event is being presented in collaboration with the Town of Bedford who held its first Juneteenth celebration in 2021, spearheaded by Andromeda Turre the Chairperson of the Town’s Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee (IDEAC).

The celebration at Caramoor will feature family-friendly activities, which will explain and immerse people in black history and culture, as well as a music performance by Jeremiah Abiah (left), a Grammy Award, Latin Grammy Award, and NAACP Image Awards nominee, and internationally acclaimed recording artist recognized as one of the great vocal stylists of our time. Inspired by Nina Simone and Anita Baker, Abiah explores the depths of jazz and soul while creating a world distinctively his own with an ethereal six-octave range. Jeremiah will perform a soulful set of music at 4pm and a variety of family-friendly activities will round out this annual June jubilee steeped in tradition and joy.

The activities begin at 3pm with Sound Art guided explorations with friendly Caramoor teaching artists. Then audiences can try their skills at Double-Dutch with the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester and regional jump-step star Nethmi De Silva, who will explain the art of stepping and how to Double-Dutch rope jump.

Antioch Baptist Church master quilters will also be on-site to share how pieces of fabric, joined together with love and bravery, helped Harriet Tubman and many enslaved people find their way to freedom. The quilters will host a hands on/immersive quilting activity in which participants will create a quilt using freedom symbols. Work together with your neighbors to embroider the names of people who were enslaved in Bedford on this community quilt which will be displayed at the Bedford Town Hall. Attendees can also unlock secret codes with the Katonah Museum of Art who will host an activity based upon the freedom quilts which used symbols that formerly enslaved people used to use to communicate hidden messages to one another along the Underground Railroad.
