What the Constitution Means to Me

  • 37 Halpin Lane Ridgefield, CT, 06877 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Ridgefield Theater Barn will present What the Constitution Means to Me starting January 31, 2025. The play, by Heidi Schreck, is directed by Nancy Limbacher Meyer and stars Ann Alford, Timothy Huber, and Zoe Guaman. Performances will take place Friday and Saturday evenings from January 31 through February 15, 2025 at 8pm, with Sunday matinees February 2 & 9, 2025 at 2pm.

What the Constitution Means to Me is a memoir play by actor-playwright Heidi Schreck, who, as a teenager, earned money for college by giving speeches and engaging in debates about the U.S. Constitution in American Legion halls across the country. Over the course of the play, Schreck addresses themes such as women’s rights, immigration, domestic abuse, and the history of the United States. Schreck varies the time period in which the play takes place, performing some scenes as her modern self and others as her fifteen-year-old self participating in Constitutional debate contests.

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum
Nov

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

Join artist Nickola Pottinger for a lively, hands-on workshop that offers participants both a hands-on introduction to paper pulp sculpting and a deeper engagement with narrative-making using personal and/or familial materials. Drawing from the techniques and approaches she uses in her own practice, and highlighted in her current exhibition fos born at The Aldrich, Nickola will guide participants in crafting their own one-of-a-kind three-dimensional paper pulp objects and sculptures. Whether you come with family, friends, or on your own, you will create a work that’s uniquely yours.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to Nickola’s practice, in which she merges traditional papermaking with found objects, weaving personal and cultural narratives into layered, tactile forms. Her work often transforms everyday and salvaged materials into objects rich with memory and meaning—inviting us to reconsider what we keep, discard, and reimagine.

Participants will then have the opportunity to create their own original paper pulp sculpture (approximately 10 x 10 x 10 inches or smaller) using all materials provided. To make the work personal, attendees are encouraged to bring a small item from home to serve as a structural support or adornment for their piece. This could be anything from a figurine, photo frame, drawing, or piece of cardboard, to an organic material, document, or other found object—provided it fits within the finished sculpture’s scale.

Because the paper works require drying time, participants will return to the Museum later in the week to pick up their completed sculpture.

Additional Details:

All materials and aprons will be provided; please dress for a wet and hands-on art-making process.

Participants are invited to join an optional guided tour of fos born led by a Museum Educator from 1:30 to 2 pm before the workshop begins.

Open to all ages; families with children are invited to register.

"Getting” Contemporary Art | Nickola Pottinger: Jamaica, Memory, and Folklore

Tuesdays, November 4, 11, and 18 | 5:30 to 6:30pm
Individual Class: $49 Member; $55 | Full Three Class Series: $108 Member; $120 | Limited seats available

“Getting” Contemporary Art is an interactive class series designed to connect today’s exhibitions with the deeper currents of art history. Each session explores the art historical and cultural contexts of artists currently on view at The Aldrich, blending storytelling, close looking, and discussion to help participants uncover new ways of seeing contemporary art. No prior experience with art history is required, only curiosity and a willingness to dive in.

“Getting” Contemporary Art is led by Kristen Erickson, art history teacher and Director of the Luchsinger Gallery at Greenwich Academy.

Attend all three classes or a single class!

Classes

Tuesday, November 4 - Nickola Pottinger: Jamaica, Memory, and Folklore

This class delves into the history and folklore of Jamaica to better understand Nickola Pottinger’s shape-shifting sculptures. Through a gallery walk, participants will examine the mix of spiritual and personal symbols in her works, which include casts of her own body and family heirlooms. Group discussion will encourage participants to uncover the layers of meaning carried by these spectral figures, which merge ancestral traditions with contemporary stories.

Tuesday, November 11 - Zak Prekop: Music in Abstraction

Have you heard of Song Exploder, the podcast where musicians take apart their songs piece by piece? In this class, participants will “explode” the vibrant abstract paintings of Zak Prekop. The session will focus on how he creates a sense of movement and stillness through color relationships, while also considering art historical precedents such as the “action painting” of the 1950s. Participants will further explore Prekop’s musical influences and how rhythm and harmony appear in his painting practice.

Tuesday, November 18 - Uman: Textiles, Calligraphy, and Transformation

Uman’s kaleidoscopic paintings reflect the story of her extraordinary life. She grew up in Somalia and Kenya, spent her teen years in Denmark, and traveled to Vienna and Paris before moving to New York where her artistic vision blossomed. This class will introduce participants to the art histories that shaped her, including East African textiles, Arabic calligraphy, and the work of Gustav Klimt and Sam Gilliam. During a gallery walk, participants will consider how Uman captures her memories, dreams, and personal transformation in visionary paintings that celebrate survival and creativity.

Instructor Bio

Kristen Erickson has been teaching art history and curating exhibitions for the past three decades. She spent eight years working in the curatorial field at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Smith College Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art before turning to teaching. Kristen currently teaches art history at Greenwich Academy, where she also runs the campus art gallery. She holds degrees in French and art history from Vassar College and Oxford University. A resident of Ridgefield, Kristen loves making contemporary art come alive for new audiences.

Film + Q&A with Filmmakers: BecomingKatharine Graham

As an unprecedented wave of book banning largely addressing race and LGBT issues is sparked in Texas, Florida, and beyond, librarians under siege join forces as unlikely defenders fighting for intellectual freedom on the front lines of democracy.

Filmmaker Kim A. Snyder (Newtown, Us Kids, 2025 Oscar®-Nominated Death By Numbers) takes us to an unexpected front line where librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy, free access to information, and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories—triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of the groups fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work—the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

aturday, December 6, 2025 | 7 pm
$10 Members and Students; $15 General Admission

Join us for an intimate duo performance by composer and percussionist Sarah Hennies and bassist Tristan Kasten-Krause, presented in connection with Zak Prekop: Durations. This event is presented in conjunction with Zak Prekop: Durations (on view through January 11, 2026), an exhibition exploring visual rhythm, repetition, and the temporality of painting. It also marks the launch of Zak Prekop’s first museum publication. This fully illustrated, 32-page softcover catalogue features bold new abstract paintings by the artist, along with an interview between Prekop and curator Eduardo Andres Alfonso.

Cocktails & Meet The Author with Lara Love Hardin

Cocktails & Meet The Author with Lara Love Hardin

An evening at the Bedford Playhouse celebrating New York Times bestselling author and Oprah's Book Club Pick - Lara Love Hardin.  Hardin’s remarkable journey— A Memoir of Lying, Stealing, Writing, and Healing. Lara recounts her slide from soccer mom to opioid addict to jailhouse shot caller and her unlikely comeback as a highly successful ghostwriter in this harrowing, hilarious, no-holds-barred memoir.

Much like Lara’s story of moving through trauma toward healing and purpose, Endeavor’s Equine Prison Program provides incarcerated women with a way forward: a place to rebuild confidence, gain skills, and plant the seeds of a new life. Her words and our work converge in a shared belief: that healing is possible, that hope can shine through, and that when we invest in second chances—through pen and page, or through horse and heart—the ripple effects can transform lives.

Attached please find invitation & details below. All proceeds will go back to Endeavor, and Lara's non-profit: The Gemma Project.

6:00 PM | Cocktails & Meet The Author

Guests are welcomed at the Bedford Playhouse for a cocktail and the opportunity to meet Lara. Book signing will take place during this hour, with books available for purchase through our partnership with local bookstore Bedford Books. If you can’t make it for cocktails, feel free to join us just for the talk at 7pm.

7:00 – 8:00 PM | Author Talk
Lara will share her story and engage in conversation about writing, resilience, and the mission behind The Gemma Project, followed by an audience Q+A. The discussion will be moderated by Elisabeth Weed.  Lara will leave promptly following the talk. Elisabeth Weed is a founder and partner at The Book Group. She began her publishing career at Curtis Brown in 1999 and later launched Weed Literary, focusing on upmarket, plot-driven fiction. She values long-term author relationships, and her clients have appeared on major bestseller lists worldwide.

Tickets $45 per person

8:00 PM | VIP Dinner at OHHO
Join us for a VIP dinner with Lara Love Hardin immediately following the talk, hosted at OHHO. Guests will enjoy drinks, dinner, meaningful conversation, and the opportunity to connect with Lara in a smaller setting. Tickets are available exclusively through Endeavor’s website. Limited quantity – purchase before the sell out!

“Getting” Contemporary Art | Zak Prekop: Music in Abstraction

Pivot with Sara Arnell, Vanessa Smith, and Betsy Ronel

Bedford Playhouse and Lets Talk presents Pivot, moderated by Vanessa Smith and Betsy Ronel, featuring author and CEO Sara Arnell.

When your life plan blows up; and your next chapter looks blank – it’s time to pivot. Let’s talk about embracing the life we want – the one that fits who we are now, not who we were. Reinvention to resilience, career change to empty nests, marriage to single parenting, dating apps to aging parents. Let’s laugh and share these common themes, the unscripted parts no one puts on Instagram. If you’re going through it, someone else is, too.

The conversations continue on Betsy Ronel’s new podcast Heaven’s to Betsy.

Paul Reiser

Paul Reiser

Comedian, actor, television writer, author and musician Paul Reiser is one of Hollywood’s most prolific creatives.

On the heels of The Problem with People, an independent comedy shot entirely in Ireland which he wrote, produced, and starred in alongside Colm Meaney and Jane Levy, Reiser has released projects across a multitude of media formats.

There was Aliens: What If…? in which Carter Burke, Reiser’s iconic character from Aliens re-emerged in a concept comic book from Marvel comics.

Reiser co-wrote The New York Times Best-Seller What a Fool Believes, the candid, freewheeling memoir of his friend and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Michael McDonald from HarperCollins/DeyStreet.

In films, Paul reprised his role from BH Cop 1 and 2 in Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and appeared in Magnolia Pictures’ comedy The Gutter, directed by Isaiah and Yassir Lester, premiering at SXSW.

He has been busy in TV as well. Appraising his role in Hulu’s critically-acclaimed comedy series Reboot from Modern Family creator Steve Levitan, Awards Daily wrote “Reiser truly excels, giving one of his very best performances…Here, he reminds us just how very funny and experienced he is in the world of television comedy.”

He also took his first step into bloody, superhero glory in Season 3 of Amazon Prime’s Emmy-nominated The Boys playing “The Legend,” and returns in the upcoming final season of the show.

And of course the return to his comedy roots with last year’s release of “Life, Death and Rice Pudding,” his first standup special in over 30 years.

Reiser is widely celebrated for his roles in two hit shows for Netflix: Stranger Things—the company’s biggest series of all time— and Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method, for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor.

Mad About You, the long-running Emmy, Peabody, and Golden Globe-winning comedy that     Reiser created and starred in with Helen Hunt returned as a limited series on Spectrum Originals.

Throughout his prolific career, Reiser has worked with both independent and mainstream filmmakers. Having earned acclaim for his supporting role in the Academy Award-winning film Whiplash, Reiser was also seen in frequent collaborator Jeff Baena’s The Little Hours and Horse Girl, which premiered at Sundance 2020, the fourth film the pair has worked on together. The veteran actor has garnered praise for notable performances in films such as Diner, Bye Bye Love, One Night At McCool’s, and The Thing About My Folks, which Reiser wrote for his co-star Peter Falk.

Reiser is a fixture behind the camera as well. He co-created and produced the seven-episode series There’s Johnny, a fictional story set behind-the-scenes of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show circa 1972, co-produced with director David Gordon Green.   The show premiered to critical praise, with Decider saying There’s Johnny! is “a television experience unlike any I’ve seen on TV in recent years” and “unfolds like a dream, a memory fondly recalled.”

As an author, Reiser’s first book, Couplehood, sold over two million copies and reached the number one spot on The New York Times bestsellers list. His subsequent books, Babyhood and Familyhood, were best sellers as well.

Voted by Comedy Central as one of the Top 100 Comedians of All Time, Reiser regularly performs sold-out standups at venues nationwide.

A SUNY Binghamton graduate of its prestigious music program, Reiser co-wrote the theme song for Mad About You, “The Final Frontier,” with Grammy-winning producer Don Was, and released an album of original songs with British singer-songwriter Julia Fordham called Unusual Suspects. Over the course of his career, Reiser has received multiple Emmys, Golden Globes, American Comedy Awards, and Screen Actors Guild nominations.

Reiser and his family reside in Los Angeles.

Music at Grace Farms | Mon Rovîa

Mon Rovîa presents a concert of peace and healing in a special program for Grace Farms, organized on the United Nations International Day of Tolerance.

Mon Rovîa reflects journeys of humanity through his Afro Appalachian music as a singer and songwriter, and from his own experiences moving from the Liberia during the country’s civil war to the United States. He was named as one of Spotify’s 2024 Juniper Artists to Watch, has been featured in the GRAMMY Museum’s New York City program series, and has sold out every headline show to date, including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Newport Folk Festival.

(75-minute performance, no intermission)

“Tolerance is much more than passively accepting the other. It brings obligations to act, and must be taught, nurtured and defended.  Tolerance requires investment by States in people, and in the fulfillment of their full potential through education, inclusion and opportunities. This means building societies founded on respect for human rights, where fear, distrust and marginalization are supplanted by pluralism, participation and respect for differences.”

Downhill Racer (1969)

Honoring the memory of actor/director/activist Robert Redford and Academy Award winner Gene Hackman, proceeds from this screening go to the benefit of Northern Westchester Hospital.

Presented by Ginnel Real Estate and Hickory & Tweed

Join us at 6pm for snacks and drinks, film begins at 7pm.

Raffle tickets for ski equipment and other prizes are available HERE.

Director Michael Ritchie’s (The Golden Child) debut film is a tense and taut look at the world of Olympic skiing. Robert Redford is the hero, a handsome loner from Idaho Springs, Colorado, bent on making it to the top of the heap. As the pressure and tension build, Redford handles himself well, learning in the process how fleeting and lonely fame can be. Redford is well cast as the all American boy chasing his dream, and Gene Hackman is excellent as the tough and demanding American ski coach.

Holiday Screening: Elf (2003)

Buddy (Will Ferrell) is different from all of Santa’s other elves. For one thing, he’s “a cotton-headed ninny muggins” when it comes to making toys. For another, he’s 6’3″. And the real clincher: He’s human! So one special December, Buddy sets off on a holiday adventure to New York City in search of his real dad. How Buddy finds his father (James Caan) and the meaning of Christmas is a joyous, jaunty, sweet-as-a-candy-cane gift for everyone.

Out of Exile: The Photography of Fred Stein

Out of Exile: The Photography of Fred Stein is the tale of a man caught up in one of history’s darkest moments; a man of conviction and courage, whose answer is to create an art that transcends bigotry.

The vibrant world of 1930s Paris; the heart-stopping suspense of fleeing across the French countryside; the crowds of refugees in Marseilles; the bustle of 1940s New York…these are some of the places that Out of Exile takes us as we follow Fred Stein’s perilous escape from the Nazis. And we are shown a cascade of brilliant photographs, full of breathless excitement, as Fred Stein discovers photography.

Throughout these experiences run the emotions: Fred Stein’s unfailing optimism in the face of hardship; his remarkable ability to connect to another person in his photographs; the dedication of his son, who, after Fred Stein’s name is forgotten, fights to bring his father’s work to the attention of the public; the power of art.

The photographs are beautiful and uplifting; the life is inspiring; together they form a powerful statement of the human spirit.

Washington Crossing the Delaware - a story told through painting & poetry

So much to be discussed!

In 1819, portrait painter Thomas Sully completed The Passage of the Delaware, the earliest known representation of the crossing. Unlike many later artists, Sully depicted the moment before George Washington began his passage: the general sits astride his white horse on the Pennsylvania side of the river, looking over his shoulder to observe his troops as they begin to cross. Calm and resolute, the central figure of Washington dwarfs the men under his command. In Sully’s composition, Washington remains isolated from the action, leading from above.

Music at Grace Farms | Broadway Inspirational Voices

Broadway Inspirational Voices returns to Grace Farms with a site-responsive program that connects us with the presence of the human voice to inspire the audience toward joy. The one-hour program features a holiday repertoire developed for Grace Farms by Connecticut native Allen René Louis, Broadway Inspirational Voices Artistic Director and GRAMMY®-nominated Creative Director and Producer.

(60 minute performance, no intermission)

About Broadway Inspirational Voices

Broadway Inspirational Voices is a diverse choir and service organization powered by Broadway artists using music to inspire hope and change lives.

In 1994 more than 32,000 people died from AIDS or AIDS-related complications in the U.S. Many of those deaths came from within the Broadway community. As Broadway grappled with the loss of an entire generation of artists, Tony and Grammy-nominated Michael McElroy (founder of the Broadway Inspirational Voices) saw in the community a profound need for hope, unity, and inspiration. He envisioned an organization where professional artists would come together and volunteer their gift to provide comfort, joy, and the promise of a better day–and as a result, The Broadway Gospel Choir was born. This magical synergy of authentic Gospel soul and Broadway bravura was re-imagined as the Broadway Inspirational Voices in 1999 and they have been the theatre community’s center of support and celebration ever since. In 2019, The Tony Awards Administration Committee presented the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre to four outstanding contributors to the Broadway industry, and Broadway Inspirational Voices was a recipient. The Tony Honor was a resounding endorsement of Broadway Inspirational Voices’s enduring work and impact and in celebration of 25 years of service. In 2020, McElroy hand picked composer/singer Allen René Louis to become the new Artistic Director for Broadway Inspirational Voices. Broadway Inspirational Voices’s diverse membership has represented over 140 Broadway shows since its inception.

CRAIG FERGUSON – PANTS ON FIRE

CRAIG FERGUSON – PANTS ON FIRE

Craig Ferguson is a multiple Grammy nominated, Peabody and Emmy Award-winning actor, writer, producer, director and comedian with a diverse career that encompasses film, television and the stage. He is a New York Times bestselling author and has recorded numerous standup specials for Netflix, Epix, Comedy Central and Amazon

The wildly popular Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson ran on CBS for ten years and remains a cult favorite on YouTube racking up millions of views every year on fan posted bootleg clips.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ferguson got his start in the entertainment industry as a drummer for some of the worst punk bands in the U.K. Following his musical stint, he began bartending in a local pub in Glasgow where he was introduced to Sir Michael Boyd, the artistic director of The Tron Theatre in Glasgow, who persuaded Ferguson to try acting. After several low paying acting gigs, Ferguson discovered he had a knack for comedy and was soon the star of his own BBC television show, “The Ferguson Theory.” After several stints on the UK comedy circuit, Ferguson brought his act to America in 1995 to star with Betty White and Marie Osmond in the short-lived ABC comedy, “Maybe This Time.” After the show ended, ABC decided to add the talented Scotsman to “The Drew Carey Show,” playing Drew Carey’s boss, ‘Nigel Wick,’ from 1996-2003.

In 2016, Ferguson debuted his original History Channel show, “Join or Die,” which featured him and his celebrity friends debating provocative topics with history experts. He also hosted Celebrity Name Game in syndication where he won the Emmy for best host two years in a row and The Hustler for ABC/Disney.

Ferguson has written the feature films “The Big Tease” and “Saving Grace”. In 2003, he made his directorial debut with “I’ll Be There,” which he also wrote and starred in. “I’ll Be There” went on to receive the Audience Award for Best Film at the Aspen, Dallas, and Valencia film festivals. Craig was also named “best new director” at the Napa Valley Film Festival. Ferguson’s other film credits include, “Niagra Motel,” “Lenny the Wonder Dog,” “Prendimi l’anima,” “Life Without Dick,” “Chain of Fools” and “Born Romantic.” In 2011, Ferguson portrayed ‘Owl’ in the Disney classic “Winnie the Pooh,” and in 2012 he portrayed ‘Lord Macintosh’ in Disney’s Oscar winning animated feature “Brave.”  He also voices Gobber in the hugely successful How To Train Your Dragon movies.

Ferguson has achieved notable success on the North American comedy circuit and has performed to sold-out theaters all across the country, including Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. He has five widely acclaimed stand-up comedy specials: “A Wee Bit O’ Revolution” which premiere in 2009 on Comedy Central; “Does This Need to Be Said” in 2011 on EPIX and Comedy Central; “I’m Here to Help” in 2013 on Netflix, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album; “Just Being Honest” in 2015 on EPIX, which earned him a second Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album; and “Tickle Fight” in 2017 on Netflix and the six part stand up/docu-series “Hobo Fabulous” on Amazon in 2020.

In 2006, Ferguson debuted his first novel entitled Between the Bridge and the River, which made it onto the bestseller list.  In 2008, Ferguson succeeded in becoming a US Citizen. His first gig as a new American was hosting the White House Correspondents Dinner in the company of President George W Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Critics raved of his witty and comical deliverance speech to the 3,000 attendees who included political journalists, celebrities, and Washington’s power players. In 2009, Harper Collins published Ferguson’s memoir American on Purpose – a book about why and how late night funnyman Craig Ferguson became an American. The book was listed on the New York Times bestseller list. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word.

His most recent book Riding the Elephant– a series of linked biographical stories- is available from Penguin books.

Visit Southwest Cafe (109 Danbury Road, Ridgefield) for dinner before the show and enjoy a complimentary margarita with your entree when you show your ticket!

Author Talk: Matisse At War with Christopher Gorham

Author Christopher Gorham discusses his latest book Matisse at War, a powerful portrait of art, resistance, and survival. In May 1940, as Parisians fled the German advance, Henri Matisse made the unexpected decision to return to France, determined to protect a lifetime of artwork. From his home in Nice, he endured years of war and occupation, refusing to abandon his country. Gorham’s vivid account explores the rise of fascism and its impact on French life and culture through the experiences of one of France’s most iconic artists and his family. Matisse at War: Art and Resistance in Nazi-Occupied France with Christopher C. Gorham

Author Christopher C. Gorham discusses his latest book and takes your questions.

In May 1940, as Parisians fled the advancing German Army, Henri Matisse was returning to the French capital. Sick, elderly and stunned by the success of the blitzkrieg, the world-famous artist was compelled to safeguard forty years of artwork. From Paris he returned to his adopted home, the ancient port of Nice on the Mediterranean, where he passed the terrible years of war and occupation. To leave France, he felt, would be a betrayal.

Hitler, seeking cultural as well as territorial conquest, had decreed avant-gardism to be “an enemy of the state.” The failed watercolorist-turned-dictator exalted traditionalism over contemporary art, taught Germans to jeer at surrealist, expressionist, and Dadaist works, and to equate artists like Matisse and Picasso with cultural disintegration. Considered “degenerate art,” many Matisse artworks would be removed from galleries and museums and hidden in storage rooms—or worse, stolen by the Nazis.

Matisse at War is a vivid portrayal of the advancement of fascism and war into French life and culture during World War II through the lens of one of the country’s most celebrated post-impressionists and his family.

  • 37 Halpin Lane Ridgefield, CT, 06877 United States (map)
